A former director at Penn National Gaming (PNG) has been busted for embezzling $75,000 worth of gift cards that were meant for company employees.

Denise Bitler, former director of benefits at PNG, was arrested last Thursday on multiple charges of theft. The arrest comes after a “labor intensive and exhaustive” investigation by Berks County police in Pennsylvania.

It is suspected that throughout Bitler’s employment at Penn National Gaming from October 2014 to June 2019, Bitler stole stacks of pre-paid gift cards to the tune of $75,000. The gift cards, which are $25 and $50, were bought by Penn to reward its employees as part of its wellness program. Bitler was the director of said program. However, instead of Bitler giving these to staff who had reached personal wellness goals like losing weight or quitting smoking, she kept them for herself. It is said that Biter spent their gift cards on medical bills, online shopping sprees, and vacations.

When Penn National Gaming was asked for comment on the matter, Eric Schippers, regional senior vice president of public affairs, said he could not comment on the matter. “Due to this being an ongoing law enforcement matter, we cannot comment other than to say the individual is no longer employed by Penn National.”

It turns out that this isn’t the only thing Bitler had been lying about. On her medical enrolment forms, she stated that she and her family were non-smokers. With this lie, Bitler, who is a frequent smoker, managed to save herself an insurance surcharge of $100 per month.

It seems like Bitler’s actions have cost Penn National Gaming and its employees their overall health. The wellness program was designed to help staff maintain a healthy lifestyle which in turn cuts operating costs by curbing expenses and lowering health insurance expenses.
