How to play Tonk Step by Step

If you want to win at Tonk, you need to know how to play the game. The point of the game is to form spreads using the cards that you are dealt with. A spread is made from three or more cards of the same rank. Alternatively, it can be three or more cards of the identical suit. Here is a step by step guide on how to play Tonk.

  1. At the beginning of the game, a basic stake amount will be agreed upon. This will be done if you are playing a real money Tonk
  2. You will then cut the cards to decide on who the first dealer will be. The player that gets the highest card will then deal first.
  3. The dealing of cards is clockwise on all hands.
  4. Each player will get 3, 5, 7, or 12 cards. These cards are dealt face down. The number of cards depends entirely on the number of players in the game.
  5. The next card is placed face up to start the discard pile. So, the remaining cards that were not dealt are placed in a stack next to the discard pile to make up the stock. These cards are face down.
  6. Each player must draw from the stock or take the top discard, after throwing away one card. This card is place face up on the discard pile.
  7. The player on the dealer’s left will take the first upcard. This player may “tunk” if their matchless cards count five or less.
  8. After that, the player will then spread their hand, revealing the matched and unmatched cards.
  9. In Tonk, all players have one turn to draw and take the discard. Once you have all had a turn to play the count of the player’s unmatched cards is counted against them.
  10. The lowest count wins. Should a player’s point reaches 100, they lose. The game will continue continues until only one player left, and that will be the winner.

Cards and stakes

In order to play Tonk, it is essential that you fully understand how the cards and stakes work. Many agree that playing card games with two to three competitors are best. But, there does tend to be a bit of complications with more than two players, so others limit the game to only two players.

Similarly, too many card games, Tonk uses a standard deck of 52 playing cards, not including the jokers. Every card used has a point value, which is its face value.  So, a five-card will be worth 5 points, three cards are worth 3 points, and so forth. The face cards are all worth 10 points, which includes the Jack, Queen, and King cards. Aces, on the other hand, are only worth 1 point.

Generally, Tonk is played for real money. Unless you are playing a demo game online, the basic stake is the amount that other players will pay the winner at the end of each hand. So, playing for real money is an important part of the game

Tonk Card Game – Winning Hand

So, if no one has won the right at the beginning of the games, there are other ways in with the winning the hand can be established. Also, Assuming that the 49 or 50 points were not claimed instantly after the deal. The game can end in one of four ways.

Firstly, you can clear up your cards without a final discard.  You can either put down a second spread or hit existing spreads three times. The winner gets paid a double stake by all the other players.

Secondly, you can run out of cards by abandoning your last card. Remember that if you have no cards left, you win. Thereafter, the other players will pay the basic stake to you.

Thirdly, you drop when it is your turn. In this case, all the other players will reveal their remaining and add up the values of the cards. However, if you have the lowest point count, you win. Again, you will get the basic stake.

On the other hand, if you don’t have the low point count, you will have to pay twice the stake. Should there be a tie between two players, you will have to pay both players the double stake.

Strategy

To improve your odds in Tonk, you need to have a good memory somewhat. If you can remember which cards were discarded, it can help you change your spread. Also, try to create spreads with low cards. This tonk strategy will help you keep low point totals in your hand.
